Five star Bognor see off Selsey
Bognor Regis Town Women cruised into the next round of the Sussex Women’s Challenge Cup after a 5-1 victory over Selsey Women at Nyewood Lane on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Rhiannon Hambleton, Millie Carter, Jade Widdowson and a brace from Alice Gue secured victory for the home side, Isabelle Childs with the sole reply for the visitors.
The Rockettes had the better of the opening exchanges with the aforementioned Hambleton and Carter causing trouble in behind the Selsey defence with their threatening runs.
With little over quarter-of-an-hour on the clock Hambleton opened the scoring as she burst onto a Kirsty Willett through ball and kept her composure to round the advancing Millie Delamont in the Selsey goal and slide the ball into the net.
The goal seemed to galvanise Selsey and they started to put together some promising passages of play, with Isabelle Wheatley seemingly have the beating of Willett for pace down the right side, but they just couldn’t find the killer ball in the final third.
Bognor doubled their lead just shy of the half-hour mark with Gue’s first goal of the of the game. A deep free-kick into the box from Loulou Robson caused confusion in the Selsey backline, under pressure from Hambleton, and Gue was there to capitalise as the ball broke and fire into the unguarded goal.
Before the break Robson saw a well-struck effort from the edge of the box saved by Delamont and the keeper gathered at the second attempt to forego any further danger.
The two-goal lead soon became three for the home side, just nine minutes into the second-half, when referee Michelle Watkins pointed to the penalty spot after Charlie Davey was adjudged to have handled the ball in her attempts to block a powerful strike from the lively Cater. The striker confidently stepped up and converted the spot-kick giving Delamont no chance.
At the other end Childs pulled a goal back for Selsey on 69 minutes, as she broke away from the defence, latching on to a ball over the top and keeping her cool to chip the ball over the onrushing Nicole Robinson, bouncing on its way into an empty net.
Despite pulling a goal back the result never really looked in doubt and the Rockettes further extended their lead with two goals in quick succession.
Nine minutes from time a corner delivered to the edge of the box by Carter, was converted expertly by skipper Widdowson on the half-volley through a number of bodies and into the bottom corner past a diving Delamont.
Just 180 seconds later, Gue scored her second and Bognor’s fifth goal of the game after good work down the left side by Hambleton. Her low ball into the box was met by Gue, who did brilliantly to open up her foot and direct the ball past Delamont and into the roof of net.
