The FA Referee Awards

At our Annual Awards Evening this month, we were proud to present Roy Cheshire with his FA Referee Award celebrating 50 years in refereeing.

Roy first qualified as a Class 3 referee on 7 June 1974, through Derbyshire FA, and became a member of Erewash Valley RA, and shortly after a committee member. He officiated on the Derby & District League, Alfreton & District Sunday League and Derbyshire Youth League.

He was promoted to Class 2 in 1976, the Women’s National League. 1979 saw Roy promoted to Class 1 (Level 4) to the East Midlands League, and 1980/81 saw a further promotion onto the Midlands I League (Level 3) involving professional clubs in the midlands area.

1981 saw Roy relocate to Kent FA, as a Kent League Referee, officiating FA Cup games and games for the Women’s FA and Armed Forces FA. In the same year, Roy officiated in the Kent FA County Cup Final.

1987 saw a further relocation to Sussex and, where Roy is still active and registered today with us today.

Over the years Roy has served on many leagues in Sussex, and at tournaments abroad. He is also a qualified Futsal referee and has held many additional refereeing positions including being President of the Sussex County Referees’ Association (RA) in 2011 and on the national RA Board in 2013. He is currently a member of Brighton RA.
